Dublin man’s sight saved thanks to the quick reaction of Tallaght store optometrist
When Specsavers Tallaght received an unscheduled visit from Thomas Parle, complaining of an irritated red eye, little did the optometrist know he would help to save the customer’s sight that day.
Irritated Red Eye
Thomas, aged 71 from Tallaght, noticed his eye had become irritated and red and he was finding it hard to see. He knew that he needed to see an optometrist and immediately went to his local Tallaght store to be examined.
Following a thorough eye test and further examination using the state-of-the-art OCT machine, optometrist, Rory Dowds referred Thomas on to the Eye and Ear Hospital where he was diagnosed with a severe case of acute glaucoma. He underwent emergency surgery to save his eyesight and was overwhelmed with the results.
Thomas explains: ‘I’ve been going to Specsavers for a number of years so when I woke up with an irritated eye, I knew I had to go in to see the team. I’m so glad that I paid them a visit as their swift action saved my eyesight. I’ll be forever grateful to the team in Tallaght.’

Optometrist Rory was delighted to hear that Thomas’ surgery had gone well. ‘It was heart-warming to hear that Thomas received such great care from our team and to hear him speak so positively about the experience he has in store,’ he says.
‘Often people don’t act on changes with their eyesight quickly enough and this can lead to problems down the line. It’s really important that if you notice any changes with your eyesight that you contact your local Specsavers store to get it seen to.’
Open for Care
Specsavers Tallaght is open for all routine testing and services, with new measures in place to keep you safe, including restrictions on the number of customers, social distancing rules and bank card payments only, where possible. Keeping in line with HSE recommendations, Specsavers staff will use personal protective equipment (PPE) and will practice full sanitisation of testing rooms and equipment.
