Audiologists help bring back the music to young Galway man giving him a sporting chance at a full life
When the Galway audiology team fitted Frank McDonagh with state-of-the-art hearing aids, his life was transformed. A keen sportsman with a passion for music, he gained new-found confidence in both his family, work and social life.
Struggling in Social Settings
Before visiting the team at Eyre Square, Frank had been struggling with his hearing for 15 years. He first noticed his hearing was changing when he was with groups of people and could not pick up what they were saying.
Onset of Anxiety
The 49-year-old from Galway found it particularly challenging at work when colleagues would ask him questions and he could not hear them. This caused great anxiety as he felt uncomfortable asking people to repeat themselves and this ultimately affected his confidence and self-esteem. As coach of the local U13s basketball team, his hearing even impacted him here, as he struggled to hear his players shouts from the court, above the noise from the game. It also impacted one of his other big passions – music – when played gigs with his band.
Television & Radio
At home, Frank was constantly increasing the sound levels of the television and radio, which meant his conversations with family had become limited and he found it difficult to understand them. It was at this point that Frank decided to get his hearing checked and he has never looked back.
Frank says: ‘Hearing aids are a big part of my life now and they make work life, family life and social activities even more enjoyable. I love playing basketball, coaching the local under 13’s basketball team and playing guitar in an acoustic band so I’d be lost without my hearing aids.’
At the start of his hearing journey, Frank was fitted with hearing aids from an alternative provider, but they caused discomfort and irritation when worn for long periods. This caused Frank to look at other options and a friend advised him to visit Nicky McCarthy from the Hearcare team at Specsavers Audiologists. This introduction started Frank on his journey to regaining his hearing and living a full and happy life.
He was fitted with state-of-the-art hearing aids and thanks to their discreet size, instant fit and exceptional sound quality, he has never looked back. The new hearing aids also have a smart music setting that reduces the sound of background noise, which is huge for Frank as music is his biggest passion and he loves to play with the band.
‘I am now quite open about wearing hearing aids and I am more confident in my interactions. I now always speak up at work and at social activities, mentioning that I am hard of hearing and wear hearing aids. I am more confident in myself and I’m a happier individual as a result. Specsavers have ultimately provided this to me by their continued quality of product and aftercare service.’
Quality of Life
Eyre Square audiologist Daniella Hudson, who also worked with Frank, was delighted to see his transformation. ‘It was heart-warming to see such a change in Frank after fitting his hearing aids and to see him speak so positively about the benefits of using aids,’ she says. ‘Often people can shy away from hearing aids or consider them to be a solution for an older audience which simply is not the case. Today’s hearing aids and technology are an option for anyone who needs them. It’s great to see such a young guy like Frank promote the benefits of wearing them and the positive impact it can have on the quality of life. No one should have to suffer in silence.’
A Happy Customer
Frank continues: ‘My experience with Specsavers has been fantastic. From the moment I walked in the door I was made feel very comfortable and I knew I was in great hands. The aftercare service is excellent. I regularly receive notifications to get a hearing check which reassures me and keeps me on top of my hearing loss. I highly recommend Specsavers as a hear care provider and I encourage anyone who has not received a hearing test recently to visit their local Specsavers store.’
Frank is keen to stress that routine hearing tests are completely ‘painless’ and ‘will change your life’. Not only does looking after your hearing health benefit your own quality of life, but it also strengthens the relationships with those around you.
