Superhero family fun day in aid of Crumlin hospital
Specsavers opticians have launched the second phase of fundraising for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin with the help of some superheroes committing to raise €100,000 to go towards the refurbishment of the hospital’s ophthalmology unit. They have just passed the halfway mark, following successful in-store static cycles earlier this year and other fundraising activity.
Superhero Family Fun Days
To celebrate the milestone, stores hosted a series of Superhero Family Fun Day events over Halloween weekend. Sinead Clohessy, chairman of Specavers Ireland, said: ‘We are delighted to have reached the halfway mark in our bid to raise €100,000 for such a great cause like Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. We have always admired the fantastic work the hospital does for children across Ireland and plan to put all our efforts into reaching the €100,000 goal by hosting our Specsavers Superhero Family Fun days.’
Department of Ophthalmology
Our Lady's Children’s Hospital, Crumlin first opened its doors in 1956 and provides a high standard of care to the 130,000 children availing its services every year. The Department of Ophthalmology at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin, for which Specsavers is fundraising for improvement, typically diagnoses and treats over 10,000 patients annually, being one of the busiest departments in the hospital. The service provides care to children suffering from common eye conditions, such as squints, which if left untreated can result in sight problems. In addition the service offers evaluation and treatment of other complex eye conditions such as congenital cataract, congenital glaucoma and visual problems associated with neurological disease. The department was expanded last in 2006 with the addition of two additional clinical examination rooms and the patient waiting area.
