Specsavers Wexford, serving the local community with top-class optical and audiology care for over 15 years, is celebrating after receiving a Platinum Employer Award for their outstanding management standards and staff development.
Platinum Employer Award
The team is thrilled to have received the honour after being externally assessed on five key areas of people management standards including, talent management, employee communications and staff development. The Platinum Employer Award is an externally validated accreditation scheme which aims to raise the bar of people management standards and help ensure Specsavers is a great place to work.
Since opening on South Main Street in 2003, the store has become an integral part of Wexford’s business community and has always strived to provide the best level of service and expertise in hearing and optical care for the locality.
The store has grown from a team of eight staff members to 35 over the last number of years and it’s thanks to each of these people and their dedication to professionalism and expertise that has made it the award-winning store it is today.
Speaking about their recent Platinum Employer award win and managing a team of 35, Mags Cregan-Smart, store director says: ‘We are always looking at ways to sustain and improve the high levels of service we provide to our customers, whilst also giving staff the opportunity to learn and develop their skills. We are both honoured and delighted to receive this award and I would like to personally thank both past and present staff members who have helped make Specsavers Wexford a great place to work. We would also like to thank all of our staff for embodying the Specsavers ethos and for playing an increasingly important role in providing the local community with excellent professional service. At Specsavers Wexford we will always ensure our staff members go the extra mile for our customers’.
The Professional Team
The professional team comprises five optometrists bringing with them a wealth of expertise, including store director Steve Schokman and Martin O'Brien, FCOptom, FAOI (Fellowship of the Association of Optometrists, Ireland), who has been with the store for 15 years and is also a member of the European Council of Optometry & Optics professional services committee and Chair of AOI CPD committee.
Also on the optometry team are FAOI’s Gillian Murphy, who brings seven years’ experience and Hannah Banville who qualified in 2017 but has been with the store for five years working throughout her studies. The newest member of the team is optometrist, Laura Phelan FAOI who, although only being with the store since August, has previous experience with the Specsavers brand having work in the Waterford store for three years.
The store also has an in-store trainer, Fiona Foley, who has been here since day one and who is instrumental in the overseeing of training new and experienced staff members on a regular basis. Her own development has taken her to platinum level within the in-house training programme and has ensured a professional team is always on hand.
Debbie Mahoney FdScOD is a long-term member of the team, having been with the store for over 15 years. Since beginning her career with Specsavers, Debbie has risen through the professional ranks of the store having started as a Dispensing Assistant and most recently qualified as a Dispensing Optician. Throughout her time in Specsavers Wexford, Debbie has also held the position of store manager.
The store also houses their own laboratory which is overseen by Trevor Breen and Jack Bellotti, who ensure that all prescriptive spectacles are made to a high quality and ready for customers in a timely fashion.
Ensuring the store is always looking it’s best and operating in a fashion best suited to customer needs is the merchandising team of Corey Farrell and Hazel Fenlon who ensure the latest frames are always on hand for customers, while Jaslyn Broaders and Jack Bellotti look after the first aid and Health & Safety ensuring all customers and staff are safe whilst on the store’s premises.
Kieran Sludds focuses on the contact lens aspect of the business and excels at the customer service he provides. Kieran goes the extra mile to ensure all customers feel comfortable and at ease in the store and shows this by knowing each contact lens customer by name. Kieran is also one of the stores’ supervisors along with Debbie Mahoney, Fiona, Ann Marie and Jennifer. Each team supervisor has the important task of ensuring every customer is looked after on a day to day basis.
In addition to these team members, the rest of the staff employed by the store is made up of full and part-time colleagues, who have their own individual responsibilities to ensure the store runs to its maximum capacity whilst also providing customers with the best service available on a day to day basis. They all play a big part in the store’s increasing success.
More than just an optician, the store also has an on-site hearing centre which is overseen by hearing director Robert Smart. Robert, together with his audiology assistant Edel Widaa, ensure that all audiology patients are treated with the correct and most suitable hearing device for each of their individual needs. The audiology team also places an emphasis on customers’ aftercare needs as well, further enhancing the customer service offering available as well as being accessible daily.
To celebrate the big award win and to thank staff for their unending support, resident party planners Jaslyn, Emma and Kelly will be planning a special awards night out for the team celebrate in style, so watch out Wexford!
