Winner of Kids' SWOTY announced
Four-year-old David McDonough from Meath has won the Kids’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year Award 2017.
The Meath youngster beat off stiff competition from hundreds of entries following a nationwide search to find Ireland’s deserving winner.
The competition, which was open to children aged four to 15, aims to celebrate children in Ireland who wear glasses with pride, to help remove any stigma associated with needing glasses. David’s entry resonated with the judges, as he encourages his younger sister Robyn to love and wear her frames, since being prescribed them this year.
David’s genuine love for his specs, describing them as his ‘windows through which he sees his adventures’, embodies the competition’s ethos perfectly. As part of the competition David has won a trip for to Legoland Windsor, staying for two nights in the Legoland Hotel.
Speaking at the prize presentation, David’s mum Jenni said: ‘David is over the moon, he loves wearing his “windows”, he’s never once reused to wear them or worried about them and it’s this confidence that leads his sister to look up to him and ultimately copy him by wearing her glasses too.
'She wants to be just like him! We are so proud of him and delighted he has been named this year’s winner.’
Sinead Clohessy, Specsavers Ireland Chairperson said: ‘We are thrilled to announce David as this year’s winner. The competition is a fantastic platform to recognise children that wear their glasses with pride and show children that they shouldn’t be embarrassed about wearing them.
'David channels this perfectly as he encourages his little sister to love her specs, just as much as he does.’
Specsavers has a huge choice of child-friendly glasses that little ones will be more than happy to wear such as the newly-launched Minions range, JCB range and a Disney collection. What’s even better, all glasses in the kids’ €55 range at Specsavers stores are free with an under-12s’ HSE optical voucher.
