Following a nationwide campaign earlier this year, Specsavers staff from all across Ireland launched a search to discover the nation’s most fabulous specs wearer.
From the thousands of entries received, Mary McGuigan from Mullingar, was selected as a finalist in the 60+ category. The Irish final took place in the RHA Gallery on Ely Place on Thursday 20 August and was presented by TV personality, style entrepreneur and spectacle wearer Darren Kennedy.
Ten finalists from around the country and ranging in age from 19-69 competed across five age categories for the biggest accolade in the specs-wearing world. They included Neil Ryan (Dublin), Lorraine O’Sullivan (Limerick), Monica Ward (Dublin), Susan Buisman (Kildare), Kate Brennan (Meath), Venetia Ryan (Sligo), Martina Dunne (Dublin), Janette Haymer (Mayo), Emma Garland (Dublin) and Mary McGuigan (Westmeath).
Speaking at the national final, Specsavers Mullingar customer Mary McGuigan said: ‘I am absolutely delighted to have reached the Irish final. I never imagined I would be selected as a finalist let alone make it all this way when I entered the competition. Today has been amazing and I feel extra proud representing Specsavers Mullingar taking part in this year’s competition.’
Ahead of the awards ceremony, Mary McGuigan was treated to a day of pampering to ensure she was red carpet ready before taking to the stage to answer questions from the judging panel which included journalist Vicki Notaro, Irish Daily Mail’s Showbusiness Editor Laura Butler, stylist Corina Gaffey along with Sinead Clohessy from Specsavers.
Fabulous goody bag
Mary McGuigan received a €215 Specsavers eyecare voucher, a framed Spectacle Wearer of the Year certificate, a bottle of Champagne and a fabulous goody bag.
The overall winner on the night was proud spectacle wearer Kate Brennan, aged 19 who just completed the Leaving Certificate, will represent Ireland at a star-studded Grand Final hosted by Emma Bunton and Bradley Walsh in London later this year.
Kate Brennan will travel to London to compete in the Spectacle Wearer of the Year Grand Final taking place on Tuesday 6 October in London. Known as the Oscars of the glasses world, the awards celebrate specs wearers from the UK and Republic of Ireland, with the overall winner receiving €12,000, a wardrobe of specs to the value of €1,000 and a luxury holiday to the Bahamas.
€1 from each entry was donated to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, raising a total of €1,250.
