Earlier this year Specsavers staff from all across Ireland launched a search to discover the nation’s most fabulous specs wearer. The Irish final, which was MC’d by TV presenter, stylist and blogger extraordinaire Darren Kennedy took place on 21 August 2014, at the Royal Hibernian Gallery on Dublin’s Ely Place.

The night saw eight finalists battle it out to become the Irish winner, with avid specs wearer Jenny Keane, a 28-year-old identical twin and special effects designer from Dublin, taking home the title of Ireland’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year. Jenny will go on to represent Ireland in the Grand Final taking place in London this October.

National final

Speaking at the national final, Ireland’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year winner Jenny Keane said: ‘I am absolutely thrilled to have been voted Ireland’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year. I never in a million years though I would win. My twin sister Amy and I both entered the competition with the same picture, her in London where she now lives, and me in Ireland. We were in total shock when we discovered we’d both been selected as regional finalists. Overall the experience has been fantastic and I cannot wait for the final in London this October. ’

The age categories at the final ranged from 16-24, 25-39, 40-59 to 60+ and this year’s competition saw the biggest number of entries to date! From the 2,000 submissions received, Emily Jane Higgans, Caroline O’Malley and Carmel Redmond were selected as finalists in the 16-24, 25-39, and 60+ category respectively.

Twin telepathy

Whether Jenny’s twin will be joining her at the overall final in London still remains to be seen, but according to Jenny, twin telepathy helped her win the coveted Irish title. ‘When I found out I was a finalist, I immediately went shopping for a new outfit. Last night, Amy called me and said she had dreamt I’d won and that I had been wearing a black outfit with a yellow blazer. She insisted I wear it so I swapped out my outfit choice and I’m thrilled to say she was right!’

MC Darren Kennedy was on hand to introduce each of the finalists to the panel of judges as they took to the stage. Judges making the all-important decision included TV personality and model agent Celia Holman Lee, beauty editor of INSIDER Magazine Nadia El Ferdaoussi, Cathy Donoghue, fashion writer with Her.ie and Specsavers Ireland chairperson, Sinead Clohessy.

Red carpet ready

All finalists enjoyed a day of star quality pampering to make sure they were red carpet ready ahead of Spectacle Wearer of the Year photo shoot and event. Runners up received a €215 Specsavers eyecare voucher, a framed Spectacle Wearer of the Year certificate, a bottle of Champagne and a fabulous goodie bag.

Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin

€1 from each entry was donated to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, a total of €2,000. Specsavers stores in Ireland have committed to raising €100,000 towards the hospital’s new opthalmology unit.
