Specsavers has crowned Kate Brennan from Co.Meath as Ireland’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2015 at an awards ceremony in Dublin.
The Irish final took place in the RHA Gallery and was presented by TV personality, style entrepreneur and spectacle wearer Darren Kennedy. Following a nationwide search earlier this year, 10 finalists across five age categories were selected from over a thousand entries to battle it out for the biggest accolade in the specs-wearing world. They included Neil Ryan (Dublin), Lorraine O’Sullivan (Limerick), Monica Ward (Dublin), Susan Buisman (Kildare), Kate Brennan (Meath), Venetia Ryan (Sligo), Martina Dunne (Dublin), Janette Haymer (Mayo), Emma Garland (Dublin) and Mary McGuigan (Westmeath).
Proud spectacle wearer
Ireland's newly crowned Spectacle Wearer of the Year winner, Kate Brennan aged 19 years old, has just completed the Leaving Certificate and will represent Ireland at a star-studded Grand Final hosted by Emma Bunton and Bradley Walsh on Tuesday 6 October in London. Known as the Oscars of the glasses world, the awards celebrate specs wearers from across the Uk and Republic of Ireland, with the overall winner receiving €12,000, a wardrobe of specs to the value of €1,000 and a luxury holiday to the Bahamas.
Speaking at the National Final, Ireland’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year winner Kate Brennan said, ‘I’m absolutely delighted to have won this award and am really excited about representing my country at the Grand Final in London. I’ve always worn my glasses with pride and it’s fantastic to be part of a competition celebrating confidence in specs.’
Confidence and style
Chairperson of Specsavers Ireland, Sinead Clohessy said, ‘We were really impressed with all of the participants and were faced with a difficult decision in selecting the overall winner. I’d like to congratulate all of this year’s finalists and, in particular, Kate Brennan who I know will do us proud in London. This event goes from strength to strength each year and it’s great to see so many people wearing their glasses with confidence and style!’.
Ahead of the awards ceremony, finalists were treated to a day of pampering to ensure they were red carpet ready before taking to the stage to answer questions from the judging panel which included journalist Vicki Notaro, Irish Daily Mail’s Showbusiness Editor Laura Butler, stylist Corina Gaffey along with Sinead Clohessy from Specsavers.
Runners up received a €215 Specsavers eyecare voucher, a framed Spectacle Wearer of the Year certificate, a bottle of Champagne and a fabulous goody bag. Ireland's Spectacle Wearer of the Year winner, Kate Brennan, will travel to London to compete in the Spectacle Wearer of the Year Grand Final taking place on Tuesday 6 October in London.
€1 from each entry was donated to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, raising a total of €1,250.
