Basil Fawlty returns to our screens – in a Specsavers ad!

For the first time in almost 40 years, comedy legend John Cleese reprises his Basil Fawlty character in a new television commercial for Specsavers.

Iconic series

The hilarious ad sees the hapless hotelier recreate one of the most memorable scenes from the iconic series with a ‘Should’ve gone to Specsavers’ twist.

Poor eyesight

After his parked car refuses to start, an enraged Basil is determined to teach it a lesson only to find himself thrashing a police car with a tree in a case of mistaken identity due to poor eyesight.

Fawlty Towers

On re-writing the famous car scene with Specsavers, actor and comedian John Cleese comments: ‘A lot of people have sent me Fawlty Towers’ scripts and they were always absolutely awful.  I can’t tell you how many times I have said no. But Specsavers had created a script that I thought was genuinely funny, so I said yes.’

Graham Daldry, Creative Director at Specsavers, said: "We realised that bringing back Basil Fawlty would have relevance for our brand some time ago, and we were delighted that John Cleese was so positive about working with us.  We believe that the outcome succeeds in revisiting one of the most memorable moments in comedy in a way that is essentially Specsavers."

Irish Television

The new ‘Should’ve gone to Specsavers’ ad will air on Irish television for the first time on 24 January.
