Dublin resident and Ireland’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year Neill Ryan spent an evening with some of the UK and Irealnd’s biggest specs-wearing superstars at the Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards.

The 27-year-old took to the stage to receive his Spectacle Wearer of the Year award at last night’s glitzy event staged by Specsavers to raise money for anti-bullying charity Kidscape. Neil was selected from thousands of hopefuls to be crowned the Ireland winner.

London finals

The 21st Spectacle Wearer of the Year awards, hosted by The Xtra Factor’s Rylan Clark at 8 Northumberland Avenue, London, saw a green carpet ablaze with bespectacled stars, including the competition’s judges, Louis Walsh, Oliver Proudlock and Grace Woodward.

After receiving his award from Darren Kennedy, Neil said: ‘I am delighted to represent Ireland tonight, particularly in a competition which is showing people that wearing glasses can make you look good and feel great. I love my glasses and how they allow me to express my individuality.’

A number of specs-wearing celebrities were also recognised with awards on the night, including with pop sensation Nadine Coyle taking home Best Specs Newcomer, Capital FM’s George Shelley bagging the Specs Style Star award and David Dickinson receiving the Services to Specs accolade, in honour of his decades of wearing their glasses with pride.

Other specsy celebs in attendance included Joey Essex, Ferne McCann, Mario Falcone, Denise Van Outen, Sinitta, Professor Green and Twiggy.

The awards saw Derek Dubery, from Belfast, presented with the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016 prize.

Monies from awards entries and sponsorship, ticket sales and a luxury raffle were wholly donated to Kidscape, raising £88,000.
